What do we mean when we say “Robin Hood Ministries is a Christian Charity”?
Just that. We believe that Jesus died for all mankind so that despite our individual and collective sin we can be restored to our Father God. We can then be in a right relationship with Him, be guided by His Spirit and come to experience His love and blessing. It means that we operate in a way in which we strive to follow Jesus’ example.
Is that why we have Ministries in our name?
The “Ministries” part of a our name is about ministering love to the poor, the unclothed, the lonely, the hungry and those in prison. This is what we enable our project partners to do on the ground, in their own way, in their own culture.
Why Robin Hood?
English folk law has it that a man existed that the people called ‘Robin Hood’. History is confused as to who he was, some say the nobleman Robin Loxley was a disenfranchised Cleric, whoever he was he fought against tyranny, the appropriation of land, excessive taxation to fund grace & favour and the persecuting of the poor. What was robbed from the poor he took back. He battled in his community against starvation and injustice. Robin was not concerned with handouts but with the rights of men to generate income from their own resources and for a fair society to be funded by fair taxation.
While we carry the name Robin Hood somewhat ‘tongue in cheek’ he still inspires hope that ordinary people come along and do extraordinary things and change social and political systems, freeing the oppressed from tyranny and poverty and who make their mark on history on our behalf
Bill Huxley, Chair of trustees RHM
"There is a need in this country [Britain] for a social conscience. And if Robin Hood is not the personification of social conscience, I don't know what is.“
